NORTH SYDNEY COUNCIL Media Release
14 March 2006
CROWS NEST BUSINESSES JOIN SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
North Sydney Council has engaged Village Green to roll out a sustainable business management program in Crows Nest. With the support of Council and the Crows Nest Chamber of Commerce, Village Green will work closely with Crows Nest businesses to help them improve their environmental sustainability.
Businesses that sign up for the program will be guided through a process of audits, workshops and training to help them identify and improve their environmental impact. In particular, they will focus on the areas of waste, water, energy, chemical use and transport.
As well as reducing their impact on the environment, businesses that join the program can expect to save around $500 in direct operating costs. The project is being funded by a grant from the State Government’s Environment Trust.
North Sydney Mayor Genia McCaffery said the Sustainable Business Management Program was operating in five regions in Victoria, with 1000 businesses participating and had recently started in Broken Hill where 200 businesses are participating.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to introduce the program here in North Sydney. For the past five years Council has been working with property owners and tenants in the North Sydney CBD to reduce their impact on the environment. This program allows us to extend that support to our other commercial districts.
“Research suggests that each small business can reduce their water use by 9%, waste to landfill by 15% and energy use by 5%. While each business may make only small changes, together the changes are significant. I hope the program will develop a culture of sustainability that will spread to all the businesses in the Crows Nest village.”
Village Green specialses in sustainable management and change systems for small business. Village Green said small to medium enterprises were the largest sector in Australia, but because of time and resource restrictions, were the least able to address sustainability issues in the workplace.
Village Green has already begun signing Crows Nest businesses to the program. The program will also operate in the Lane Cove local government area.
